Record ordinary observations
Note the day, affected area and the activity that happened before the leak. Existing photographs can show whether the mark changed between visits. You do not need a complicated log or a series of home experiments.
Include the dry periods
Knowing when the area stayed dry can be as useful as recording when it was wet. Explain whether heating, bathing or appliance use differed. The engineer decides whether suitable controlled checks can investigate that relationship.
Do not recreate damaging conditions
Avoid repeatedly running a fitting if doing so releases water into the building. Safety and preventing further damage come first. The history helps plan a professional test without deliberately making the problem worse.
