It shows surface temperature
A thermal image represents variations at a surface. Heating pipes, insulation, airflow and moisture can all influence the pattern. It is not a photograph of the pipe behind the wall.
Conditions affect usefulness
Recent heating use and the construction influence what can be interpreted. The engineer may advise how to prepare the system for the visit. A strong colour difference is useful only when considered in the context of the building and other checks.
Combine clues before opening
An apparent anomaly can guide further assessment, but it should not be treated as proof of a leak by itself. Pipe testing, moisture comparison or other relevant methods may strengthen or challenge that interpretation. Read the technology guide to see how the methods complement one another.
